Learn persuasive writing techniques
When I first started out in marketing, I had a great writing mentor, my boss. She was so terrific because in her previous life, she’d worked as a reporter and a newspaper editor. She learned good mentoring from her editor, and did the same for me.
She gave me the opportunity to learn by doing and learn by example. Now, that doesn’t mean I got to write stuff and just throw it out there. No, she spent time with me, not just critically editing after I was done, but reviewing beforehand the purpose of each communication. This teaching, mentoring style was incredibly powerful for me. I gained confidence to become an effective copywriter.
Effective copywriting by example
My training and seminar programs use this same formula. From experience, I know it’s much easier to learn when you’re steeped in the experience, when the information presented is relevant to your experience. That’s why I don’t use consumer marketing examples in my business-to-business writing workshops and seminars. Consumer examples are usually sexier, but B2B marketers find it difficult (and irrelevant) to apply those lessons to high-tech, industrial or any other B2B marketing.
